The Strada del Prosecco

Logo of the Strada del ProseccoOpened officially in 1966, the "Strada del Prosecco" (Prosecco Road) extends for over 50km across the internationally renowned wine producing area.

The Strada links Conegliano with Valdobbiadene, the capital cities of the Prosecco D.o.C. and the ends of the road.

In this small corner of Veneto, far away from the noise and frenzy of bigger cities, our guests will enjoy the sight of a breathtaking landscapes, small villages lying graciously among vineyards, old rural towns, small "pievi" enriched with beautiful frescoes, of ancient abbeys and elegant villas.

Besides these hidden gems of history and art, the Strada offers characteristic Italian restaurants ("trattorie", "ristori", "agriturismo" and "osterie") with a wide choice of food, from the simplest to the most sophisticated cuisine, always served with a generous glass of delicate Prosecco.

The itinerary

The tour begins in the local town of Conegliano, traditional home of fine wines and seat of the important Oenological institute (study of wine) founded in 1876.

After a visit to the evocative Contrada Granda, the trip continues on to the castle. After the Porta Ser Bele (one of the old gates) the Strada winds over the crest of the hill and crosses the villages of Costa and La Guizza, reaching the Feletto.

Here we discover the "Camaldolese" hermitage in Rua, where we enjoy a wide view of the Valbona. We then continue to the millenary Pieve of San Pietro, decorated with precious frescoes and located on a hillock overlooking the Soligo valley.

We continue on towards Refrontolo which has become known as "Marzemino island", from the name of the sweet wine produced locally since about the 16th century.

A short detour takes in the enchanting valley of the Lierza river, site of the beautiful watermill called "Molinetto della Croda", erected in 1541.

The secluded villages of Rolle and Zuel, immersed in a beautiful mountain landscape are next on the agenda, passing through the steep wooded slopes and glimpsing the profile of the Prealpi protecting the Vallata on its northern side.

Old logo of the Strada del ProseccoA further detour to the Valmareno area takes the visitor to the Castello Brandolini in Cison and to the Cistercian abbey founded by a group of monks in Follina around the 12th century.

Back on the Strada del Prosecco, the trip continues through the Soligo valley and reaches Pieve di Soligo, capital city of the Quartiere del Piave and centre of the industrial district renowned for home furniture.

The road then leads to the centre of Solighetto dominated by the 18th century Villa Brandolini. In the nearby village of Soligo we find the beautiful church of Santa Maria dei Caminesi featuring interesting frescoes, as well as the church of San Gallo on an hill of its own. Half way up the hill, next to the Casa Rossa restaurant, there is a tunnel that extends about 200m into the hill, and which keeps a constant temperature of 14°C, ideal for storing wine.

The Strada continues into the increasingly dense vineyards and arrives in the "Costa d'Oro". Framed by the hills of Farra, the Torri di Credazzo (ruins of an ancient castle belonging to the Caminesi), the thousand year old church of San Lorenzo and the Savoini and Caragiani-Ricci villas, are perfectly set in the landscape.

Through more vineyards to Col San Martino, originally a military presidium, protected by the San Virgilio church high up on the top of the hill.

Crossing the Raboso river valley the route goes on to Guia, where the hills gradually merge into the mountains and vineyards climb up to the thick chestnut forest. The Strada starts descending slowly and briefly runs through the Cartizze, where a particularly prestigious type of Prosecco is grown, producing the characteristic "Spumante."

Towards the end of the route, we find the picturesque villages of Santo Stefano and San Pietro di Barbozza, home to the "Confraternita dei Cavalieri del Prosecco", who meet periodically in an evocative cellar.

The route ends in Valdobbiadene, a delightful city lying at the base of the mountain, and hosting the famous annual exhibition "Mostra Nazionale dello Spumante" at Villa dei Cedri in September.
